Navy ship intercepts asylum seeker boat

A boat carrying an estimated 34 asylum seekers has arrived in Australian waters.

HMAS Maryborough intercepted the vessel northeast of Ashmore Reef on Tuesday afternoon, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said in a statement.

Initial indications suggest there are 34 passengers and three crew on board.

Border Protection Command will arrange for the passengers to be transferred to Christmas Island for security, health and identity checks.
