Navy officer killed in Karachi

“Two gunmen riding a motorbike intercepted Captain Naveed’s vehicle and opened fire at him and his wife,” AFP quoted a local police official as saying on Wednesday.

The official went on to say that the attack took place in the busy eastern district of Karsaz, near Pakistan’s Navy headquarters.

He added the officer has died on the spot, while his wife has sustained gunshot wounds. She was immediately taken to a nearby naval hospital for treatment.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, though Taliban militants are usually blamed for such incidents.

In March 2011, Taliban militants raided a naval base in the violence-stricken city of Karachi, killing 10 staff members and destroying two US supplied maritime surveillance aircraft. The Pakistani security forces, however, managed to retake control of the base after 17 hours.

Wednesday killing coincided with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s presence in Karachi for talks with senior security officials and political parties.

Sharif launched his two-day trip to the port city on Tuesday, focusing on the deteriorating “law and order situation” in the city.

Karachi, known as the largest and most populous metropolitan city of Pakistan, has been the scene of ever growing violence as well as ethnic and political tensions.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, in the first six months of 2013, almost 1800 people lost their lives in targeted attacks in Karachi, compared with the death toll in the same period of last year which stood at 1,215.
