Nato commander apologises after troops ‘improperly dispose of Koran’

Ahmad Kabir, the chief of Bagram district of Parwan province, told AP: “I
haven’t seen it myself and we are talking to them and are investigating to
see if is true.

“The protesters are nervous over these claims of the holy book being
burned.”

Allegations the Koran has been mistreated by foreign troops have often
provoked angry protests in Afghanistan.

A mob of protestors stormed the United Nations compound in Mazar-i-Sharif in
April 2011 killing four Gurkha security guards and three diplomats after
Terry Jones, a Florida pastor, burned a Koran at his church.

The stunt provoked other riots throughout Afghanistan.

As a crowd of demonstrators gathered on the capital’s main eastern road to
Jalalabad on Tuesday morning, restaurants and shops frequented by foreigners
closed their doors in preparation for violence.

Another crowd of several hundred gathered outside Bagram airfield and petrol
bombs were thrown at a gate, witnesses reported.

The Afghan ministry of Interior said it had deployed extra police on the
streets of Kabul to control the protests.

Gen Allen’s statement said: “I have ordered an investigation into a
report I received during the night that ISAF personnel at Bagram Airbase
improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which
included Korans.

“When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped
them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate
religious authorities.”
