National approach on firearms sought

A unified approach from state and commonwealth governments is needed to tackle the illegal firearm market in Australia, a NSW minister says.

Police ministers from across the country met in Melbourne on Friday to discuss making firearm legislation stronger and more consistent.

NSW Police Minister Michael Gallacher welcomed the national approach, saying the problem extends across state borders.

“To target the illegal firearm and trafficking market we need to have the federal government, state and territories working in unison,” Mr Gallacher said in a statement on Friday.

He said governments had to remain proactive when combating organised crime.

As a first step, a working party would be established to analyse firearm legislation across the country and look at how it can be improved.

A commonwealth firearms intelligence team would also be used to coordinate data from several agencies.

“Police ministers from across the country agreed a coordinated national approach to serious organised crime involving firearms, including targeted enforcement measures against high risk groups is the way forward,” Mr Gallacher said.

“I will continue to work with my federal and state colleagues to ensure we have tough and proactive measures to target the illicit use … of firearms.”
