Want to own the second coolest vehicle Armstrong ever rode in? Now’s your chance
When you think of NASA collectibles, you probably imagine things like astronaut helmets, pieces of disassembled ships, or maybe even a moon rock or two. But up for sale on eBay is one of the coolest — and maybe even weirdest — chunks of NASA history ever put up for auction: Neil Armstrong’s 1967 Chevrolet Corvette.
During the 1960s Space Race, way back when the public was still in awe of mankind’s quest for the Moon, a Chevy dealership in Melbourne, Florida decided to give all the NASA astronauts brand new Corvettes. The generous dealer let the space jockeys drive the cars for a year, and then trade them back in for brand new models, which is a pretty sweet deal no matter what way you look at it.
According to the eBay seller — who claims to have paperwork and all the necessary signatures to prove his story — the car was driven by Armstrong for a year, at which point a different NASA employee purchased the car from the dealer. That man held on to the car for over 40 years, until the owner recently sold it to the man who has now put it up on eBay.
Unfortunately, while the car has just 38,000 miles on it, the years have not been kind to the old girl. The car’s paintjob, fenders, and grimy engine all need a complete overhaul to get the vehicle back to a showroom shine. Still, it’s a car that was once owned by the first man on the Moon, which helps explain its current top bid of $120,000.
