STUDENTS stressed about NAPLAN are taking the tests “too seriously”, a peak education body said yesterday.
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sat the first of three numeracy and literacy exams yesterday.
NAPLAN data is used to rank schools on the My Schools website.
P&C spokeswoman Rachael Sowden said it was important to reinforce to students that the stakes for individual performance were not high.
“NAPLAN is a positive thing because it tells us where our kids are doing well and where they need a bit of extra assistance,” Ms Sowden said. “It isn’t anything more than a diagnostic test to support our schools and children.”
Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority chief executive Robert Randall said the exams were important for academic development.
“Literacy and numeracy are at the heart of everything that goes on in schools and it makes sense to check how students are progressing,” he said.
“NAPLAN provides important information … to identify strategies to improve educational results.”
