‘NAM summit, chance to remove doubts’

“Holding the NAM summit in Tehran will entail the further improvement of the social, cultural, economic and political position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the international scene,” Ahmad Ariyayeenejad said on Saturday.

Iran will be hosting the 16th summit of the NAM from August 26 to 31.

The Islamic Republic will also assume the rotating presidency of the movement for three years during the Tehran summit.

Aryayeenejad added that the Tehran summit would be an opportunity for the NAM member states to strengthen their convergence.

The Islamic Republic should make use of the convergence among NAM member countries, the Iranian legislative pointed out.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 17 observer countries, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

NAM’s purpose, as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979, is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries.”

Aryayeenejad emphasized that Iran is not isolated and that sanctions are an opportunity for the country’s development and strength.

The Iranian lawmaker dismissed Western powers’ claims about the country’s isolation and said, “If Iran’s isolation means that we [should] accept their irrational demands and quit Islam, we … will continue to cut ties with the arrogance.”
