North Korea has fired two short-range missiles into the sea, South Korea’s military says, only days after Pyongyang tested new precision-guided missiles.
A South Korean Defense Ministry official said North fired the missiles into the East Sea from its east coast on Sunday.
“Both landed in international waters beyond its sea border,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The official did not give further information about the type of the missiles, but South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said they were Scud missiles with a range of 500 kilometers.
Japan’s Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera also said that Pyongyang fired a number of ballistic missiles, adding that Tokyo filed a protest with North Korea through its embassy in the Chinese capital, Beijing.
The Sunday launch came only three days after Pyongyang fired three short-range missiles into the sea. Pyongyang said on Friday that leader Kim Jong-un guided test launches of the newly developed precision-guided missiles.
The new test also came ahead of a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Seoul to discuss issues including Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
Pyongyang recently conducted a series of rocket and ballistic missile launches and threatened to carry out a new nuclear test.
North Korea staged three nuclear tests, in 2006, 2009 and 2013, at the Punggye-ri site.
Tensions between the two Koreas have risen in recent months following Pyongyang’s missile tests in March. North Korea fired short-range missiles in a show of force against the ongoing military drills between South Korea and the US.
