N Korea blasts US, South over flag insult

“It is an extremely grave military action and politically-motivated provocation to fire live bullets and shells at the flag of a sovereign state without a declaration of war,” North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement, according to a report by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Pyongyang made the reaction to the US-South Korean military exercise near the North Korean border last week, which involved more than 2,000 combined military forces in the maneuver.

The South Korean Defense Ministry, however, said the emblem symbolized North Korea’s command post and it was the first time that the North’s flag was used in a military drill.

“We used it to show our determination to strongly respond to any provocations by North Korea,” a South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman said.

Pyongyang “will further bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defence as long as the US, the world’s biggest nuclear weapons state, persists in its hostile policy,” the statement went on say.

A three-day naval drill which began on Saturday is currently underway in the Yellow Sea with the aim of tracking down of long-range missiles launched by North Korea as well as intercepting of its submarines.

The US and South Korea have conducted numerous massive joint naval and aerial drills in the waters east of the Korean Peninsula. Seoul says the drills are routine and defensive in nature.

The two rival Koreas have been at war since the 1950-53 conflict that led to the militarization of the two states’ borders and division of the Korean peninsula.

Pyongyang also accuses Washington of plotting with regional allies to topple the country’s government.
