Murder puts gun crime further in spotlight

The execution-style murder of a man in Wollongong and another shooting in Sydney’s west is certain to heap even more pressure on NSW authorities as they try to address violent gun crime.

A man in his 30s was shot several times in Gannet Avenue, Berkeley about 5.10pm (AEST) on Saturday with the suspected gunman using a motorbike to flee the scene.

The victim was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

Detectives believe the man was deliberately targeted and said it was not a random attack.

A police spokesman was not able to immediately clarify where on the body the man was shot, only that a number of bullets were fired at him.

The murder was not thought to be a bikie gang-related.

Meanwhile, a home in Greenacre, in Sydney’s west was peppered with bullets on Saturday night.

A woman inside the townhouse, in Chiswick Road, hurt herself as she dived for cover when the gunfire rang out about 7.45pm (AEST).

Two other people inside the home were not hurt.

Police were searching for a man who was seen near the home around the time of the incident.

There have been more than 40 shooting incidents in Sydney in 2012, including 10 in 10 days at the start of April.

The Sydney shootings have led to increasingly fervent demands from the state opposition to increase police numbers and for the state government to hold crisis meetings addressing gun crime.

Opposition police spokesman Nathan Rees last week claimed the Greater Sydney region was 242 police officers below authorised strength.

But senior police, including Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli, dismissed the call for increased police numbers, saying many of Sydney’s shootings were deliberately targeted between known criminals.

It is thought many of the city shootings have been sparked by drug and territory disputes.
