“The government should urgently increase protection for civilians in the
Bakouma area and review the charges against the hunting reserve employees.”
She condemned delays in bringing charges against the men and called on the
judicial authorities to “avoid a miscarriage of justice” by fully
exploring all leads in its investigation of the attack.
“It is crucial for justice to be done for the brutal killing of the 13
gold miners,” Miss Sawyer said.
“But justice should be based on solid evidence and judicial proceedings
that respect the rights of the accused. If there has been an injustice, it
should be promptly addressed.” Brought up on a farm on the North Yorks
Moors, Mr Simpson is the son of a well-known local farmer who breeds
pheasants for shoots.
He has worked for Mr Mararv’s company for two years as both general manager
and as the chief pilot bringing wealthy clients to the firm’s camps by light
aircraft from the capital.
CAWA offers wealthy individuals the chance to track and shoot some of Africa’s
most exotic wildlife, including giant forest hog, Lord Derby’s Eland,
buffalo and lion, among other species.
Mr Simpson’s family were not immediately available for comment.
