MPs: UK government losing global clout

British parliament’s Joint Committee on National Security Strategy has launched a scathing attack on British Prime Minister David Cameron saying his government’s policies have undermined Britain’s military capabilities and diplomatic influence.

Furthermore, British MPs expressed their concerns over the shift in the US military’s focus back to the Asia-Pacific region where, they maintain, the UK “has little direct interest.”

“If the US is moving its focus eastwards, there is the possibility it will become involved in conflicts in which the UK has little direct interest,” said the panel of House of Commons and House of Lords members in its report.

“Conversely, the US may be less interested in situations involving UK interests,” added the committee.

The chairman of the committee Margaret Beckett, Britain’s foreign secretary form 2006 to 2007, lashed out at the country’s national security strategy which announced that the shift of economic power from the west to the developing countries should not affect Britain’s determination to play a key role in the world’s affairs.

“A good strategy is realistic, is clear on the big questions, and guides choices. This one does not,” said Beckett.

British media have raised great concerns over any damage to the Special Relationship between Britain and the US after the American president Barak Obama said in 2011 that France was the greatest ally of the US.

Recently, British officials also expressed their concerns over why the US “fails to express any support whatsoever of the UK, and remains silent” on the issue of Las Malvinas, as described by Nile Gardiner, an aide to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

British MPs called upon Cameron to “reflect deeply on the long term implications” of any damage to the Special Relationship.
