MPs probe MI5-Libya secret deal

The British daily The Mail on Sunday has revealed that MI5 agents and Gaddafi regime spies operating in Britain conducted secret joint operations to hunt down Libyan dissidents.

MI5 even provided Gaddafi spies with secure cell phones and a luxurious safe house in London’s Knightsbridge area.

The Home Office announced MPs on the Intelligence and Security Committee in the British Commons have launched investigations on MI5’s collaboration with Gaddafi’s regime, especially to find out whether the service has breached the Geneva Conventions and the Human Rights Act.

MI5 apparently targeted anti-Gaddafi asylum-seekers and refugees in 2006 telling them to betray their anti-Gaddafi connections in Libya or risk being deported to the African country whose regime was at the time widely suspected of torture and murder of political prisoners.

This comes as The Daily Mail also quoted a senior former intelligence officer as saying it is “difficult to imagine” that the collusion was underway without the knowledge of Home and Foreign Secretaries under former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair.
