MPs mull same-sex marriage support

TWO independent MPs say they remain open minded about supporting laws on same-sex civil unions if proposed bills to legalise gay marriage fail.

Rob Oakeshott and Andrew Wilkie said if bills to legalise gay marriage were defeated in parliament they would remain “open minded” about civil unions but fellow independent Tony Windsor was less committal, saying only that he remained opposed to gay marriage.

Two private members’ bills to legalise gay marriage are currently before federal parliament.

Mr Wilkie said he was unequivocally in favour of changing the marriage act to legalise marriage equality while Mr Oakeshott said he wanted to work through the gay marriage bills before making a decision on supporting civil unions.

“I’m open minded as well,” he said today. “I’m playing what’s in front of me.”

Asked if he would support same-sex civil unions, Mr Windsor said: “That would depend on what the definition is. I don’t support gay marriage”.

Labor’s national conference in December endorsed same-sex marriage but many federal MPs think legislation to change the Marriage Act will be defeated in parliament.
