Federal Labor MP Dick Adams says today’s caucus meeting is not about rallying support for Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Ms Gillard has called the meeting amid increasing media speculation that she will soon face a leadership challenge from Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd – who she ousted in in a leadership coup in 2010.

But Mr Adams has played down any rift within the Labor party and says the meeting, which will be followed by a barbeque at the Lodge, is an opportunity to talk about policy issues.

He admits there has been speculation about the leadership but he says no-one has rung him to ask who he would support.

“I’ve been around a long time and I’ve had a lot of calls over the years from people who aspire to be leaders… but I’ve had nobody calling me to start making lists and I don’t believe there are being lists made up,” he said.

“I’m sure the hard heads will look at the polls, not the public polls but the polling that is being done by the political parties.”

When questioned if he supports Ms Gillard, Mr Adams would simply say that he “supports the leader”.

“If I change my mind I will tell the PM that she doesn’t have my support. I support the leader, I don’t believe it’s time to change the leader,” he said.

He says the leadership issue has been blown up and the Government should be more concerned about how it communicates its achievements.

“In general circumstances, communications could be a big part of that in how the message is being delivered,” he said.

Mr Adams says he thinks the Government can communicate “much more effectively” than they currently do.

The Gillard Government has been plagued with problems this year, starting with the ditching of the pokies deal with independent MP Andrew Wilkie and then the furore over the Aboriginal Tent Embassy protests.

There is growing despondency among Labor MPs, with some concluding that Ms Gillard’s leadership is in “deep trouble” and suggesting there could be a leadership challenge before the Queensland election on March 24.

Ms Gillard’s backers insist there is no appetite in caucus to return to Kevin Rudd.

Those who want Mr Rudd back in the job are keenly suggesting his return to the Lodge is on the cards; it is just a question of when.
