Results of a recent poll show that young adults don’t much like presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Those results are especially true for young people of color.
The poll is the first to focus on the opinions of young people of color, and it highlights how race and ethnicity shape the opinions of this generation. The GenFoward survey was conducted June 14-27 and polled 1,965 adults age 18-30 years.
Some specific findings of the survey include: Only nineteen percent of young people have a favorable view of Trump compared to seventy-five percent of young people who hold an unfavorable view of him. The respondents with an unfavorable of Trump include six percent of young African Americans, ten percent of young Hispanics, twelve percent of young Asian Americans, and twenty-seven percent of young whites. Two-thirds of the respondents believe Trump is a racist. That included nearly six in ten whites, and almost eight in ten African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians.
About seven in ten of the respondents opposed Trump’s plan to temporarily ban Muslims from other countries from entering the U.S. and seven in ten opposed his plan to build a wall along the U.S. southern border. Sixty percent said illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country; that included about half of young whites, and large majorities of young Hispanics, African Americans and Asian Americans.
The survey was sponsored by the Black youth Project at the University of Chicago.
