The survey, conducted by ETH Zurich, an engineering, science, technology, mathematics, and management university, has found that at least 81 percent of the Swiss reject the idea of becoming a member of the EU, IRNA reported on Sunday.
Only 19 percent of the respondents, who belonged to all walks of life, favored the idea of EU membership, the survey suggested.
The rate of support for EU membership was the lowest compared to previous polls which reflected over-20- or, in some cases, over-30-percent approval for the country’s becoming a part of the 27-nation bloc.
Most of the respondents to the recent poll believed that the European Union is facing serious financial crisis and that they were not optimistic about its future.
Under the Swiss system of direct democracy, any change in the Swiss constitution has to be voted on by the populace. Therefore, the issue should be put to vote in a national referendum attended by the majority of those eligible to cast their ballots.
