Moreton Island fire rages but public safe

A bushfire on an island off Brisbane continues to burn but it’s not threatening life or property.

The fire has a 400-metre front and has been burning on the popular tourist destination of Moreton Island since Wednesday.

It broke out north of Cowan, sparked by a vehicle fire, and had scorched more than 350 hectares of swampland and forest on the island’s western side by Friday morning.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service spokesman Anthony Contarino says firefighters conducted backburning on Thursday night.

He hopes rain, which is expected on Friday, will help extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters are monitoring the fire on two fronts, at Cowan and Bulwer, and there is no immediate threat.

“Most of the resources going today (from Brisbane) would be monitoring that (Bulwer) section of the fire,” Mr Contarino told ABC Radio on Friday.

“The Bulwer area is our main focus and some of the campsites around Benowa.

“The eastern section of the fire is in the hills and it’s inaccessible and it’s not a priority for us at the moment.

“The public are safe.”

Mr Contarino says no new camping permits are being issued while the fire rages although vehicle permits are still being distributed.

“We’ve suspended any additional camping permits,” he said.

“Rain would be excellent, a lot of it.”

“The rain that is forecast would be a very nice thing to happen.”
