nsnbc : The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reports nine new cases of typhoid among Palestinian refugees that have been displaced due to fighting in Yarmouk, Damascus and host communities. The agency urges donors, stressing that it only received 31% of the funds to cover its work for Palestinian refugees in Syria.
The UNRWA reports that it has established a health point in Yalda where the agency is treating 330 patients over the course of the day. UNRWA issued a press release, stating that this included 9 suspected cases of typhoid and 1 case of scabies. Typhoid is one of the major, but widely unacknowledged contributors to death in conflict areas.
UNRWA warns that the high summer temperature and regular interruption of water and food supplies continue to affect Yarmouk, Yalda, Babila and Beit Saham. Communicable illness remains a main source of profound vulnerability for civilians, adds the agency. In late August the agency began warning about the spread of typhoid in Yarmouk, the largest Palestinian refugee area in Damascus.
UNRWA stressed that health services in these areas are extremely limited and lack the capacity to respond to major outbreaks and other serious health needs. For this reason, it is vital that UNRWA medical assistance continues on an indefinite basis and is expanded to include other humanitarian support.
UNRWA reiterates that its priority remains the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians within Yarmouk itself and UNRWA reiterates its strong demand for respect and compliance with obligations to protect civilians and to establish secure conditions under which UNRWA can deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance.
The agency describes the vulnerability of civilians in Yarmouk as being of the highest severity. UNRWA expressed that it is deeply concerned that without access, the most basic humanitarian needs of Palestinian and Syrian civilians, including many children, continue to be left unmet. UNRWA’s mission on September 1 was conducted with the facilitation of the Syrian authorities.
UNRWA calls on Donors for Support.
UNRWA notes that as armed violence continues to threaten the lives and safety of Palestine refugees throughout Syria, it appeals for donors to increase their support to the UNRWA Syria Crisis Appeal, which has received only 31% of the funds needed for 2015.
More than 95% of Palestine refugees now rely on UNRWA to meet their daily needs of food, water and healthcare. Priority interventions include cash assistance, which enables UNRWA to serve 460,000 Palestine refugees in need. Additional funding is also required for critical non-food items including blankets, mattresses and hygiene kits for displaced Palestine refugee families throughout Syria.
