nsnbc : More than 1,000 persons were detained during anti-corruption protests in Russia on Monday. The Russian police watchdog OVD-Info reported that 866 protesters were detained in the capital Moscow alone. At least 32 of those who were detained were held overnight.
Hundreds were also arrested during similar anti-corruption protests in the city of St Petersburg. OVD-Info reported that at least 245 people were being held in detention during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Local journalists in St Petersborg reported that about 400 people in the city, including about 140 minors are facing charges for breaking local anti-protest laws. Similar protests and arrests were also reported from Novosibirsk, Vladivostok and other cities.
Police in different cities disputed OVD-Info’s numbers and claimed only 150 had been detained in Moscow and 500 in St Petersburg. The anti-corruption protests coincided with the Russia Day holiday.
The demonstrations were organized by presidential hopeful Alexei Navalny and circles around him. Navalny and colleagues accused Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of building a corruption empire. Medvedev and the Kremlin have denied the allegations. Some say “corruption” is a social construct – maybe a better words would be an oligarchy with a good measure of nepotism would be more suitable than “corruption”.
