The family of NSW teenager Alex Wildman, who committed suicide after being repeatedly bullied at school, will receive a six-figure payout after settling their lawsuit against the NSW Education Department today.

Alex, 14, took his life in July 2008, after a series of violent run-ins with bullies at Kadina High School in the state’s north.

In 2010, a coroner found that the bullying was a significant factor in Alex’s death.

Bullied … Alex Wildman.

The teenager was punched repeatedly on the head two days before he died, an attack that was filmed by another student on a mobile phone.

Another fight was planned for the day on which he died.

Alex’s family took the NSW Education Department to court following the coroner’s findings.

Today, the Civil Court division of the Downing Centre District heard that the matter had been settled, with the NSW Education Department agreeing to a six-figure payout.

The matter was about to go to trial.

A NSW Education Department spokesman said the department “offers its condolences to Alex Wildman’s family and friends”.

“What happened to Alex is a tragedy. Unfortunately the department cannot comment on the size of the settlement,” he said.

The settlement coincided with today’s National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, a government-backed campaign to raise awareness of bullying in schools.
