A 27-year-old North Carolina man has been arrested and charged with 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offense for engaging in sexual activities with a 14-year-old girl.
According to the Daily Mail, Jarred Workman allegedly met the girl online prior to agreeing to meet in person. The girl invited Workman into her home, where he subsequently carried out multiple acts of statutory rape and sex offenses. The man also reportedly lived in the teenager’s closet from April 27 to May 2. He was only discovered after the girl’s mother entered the closet to store some of her daughter’s belongings.
“I was sorta shocked more than anything. I asked him who he was and he said Jarred Workman and he was 19,” the mother said to WSOCTV regarding her discovery of Workman in the closet.
Workman also ran away from the scene, managing to avoid the authorities for two weeks before turning himself into law enforcement officials in North Carolina on Monday.
If convicted on all charges he faces, Workman could spend up to live in prison without parole. Workman made his first court appearance Tuesday morning.
Lt. Bill Hamby of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office expressed his disgust towards Workman’s actions.
“Just the fact that he would be that brazen. To come up here and meet a girl online and then stay in her residence not knowing what her parents are or what they are about,” Hamby said.
The girl’s mother commented how her life has been altered as a result of the incident.
“I’m uncomfortable in my own home. I’m scared. I can’t sleep at night,” the mother said, “The Internet has just ruined that poor girl. She was just taken advantage of.”
