Molan issues warning on military budget cuts

The Government saved about $4 billion in the last budget by delaying some defence programs and cutting back others.

Major-General Molan has told Channel Ten that Australia will struggle to defend itself by 2020 if spending stays at current levels.

“If you’re going to produce a force that can fight, you’ve got to have jets, you’ve got to have command and control of those jets, you’ve got to have protection under the sea,” he said.

“I just can’t see now where everything will line up.”

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott sparked debate last week when said he was concerned about the cuts.

Mr Abbott was speaking at conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation when he was asked about defence spending cuts in Australia.

“As a result of defence cuts in the recent budget, Australia’s defence spending as a percentage of gross domestic product is now at its lowest level since – wait for it – 1938,” Mr Abbott told the audience.

“So that is quite a concern given that we do not live in a benign environment, we do not live in benign times.

“I don’t say that savings are impossible in defence, but I do think that it is irresponsible to save money in defence in a way that compromises your military capability, given that Australia’s military capabilities are not vast to start with.”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard fired back, arguing that Mr Abbott had voted for the defence budget he was now criticising.

“Mr Abbott has reached a new low in negativity, by going overseas and criticising this nation’s national security credentials in front of an overseas audience,” she said.

“That is a new low in negativity even for Mr Abbott.”
