Moderate quake hits northwest China

China Earthquake Networks Center said that the tremor occurred at 6:50 a.m. local time on Friday (2310 GMT on Thursday) in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The epicenter was monitored at 39.4 degrees north latitude and 81.3 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 30 kilometers.

The worst of China’s earthquakes in recent years happened on May 12, 2008 when the Sichuan earthquake struck. About 70,000 people were killed and at least 4.8 million people were made homeless.

Mianyang, Ngawa, Deyang, Guangyuan, and Chengdu cities suffered the greatest loss of life.

Most of the buildings that collapsed were in rural areas and did not adhere to building codes.

The 8-magnitude Sichuan earthquake was the deadliest to strike China since the 1976 Tangshan quake, which had a death toll of 240,000.
