Model sues agency for describing her as ‘too fat’

Miss Levinson-Arps said that her client had “no chance” of having hips
measuring 35.4 inches, even with a strict diet and exercise routine.

She added: “Already she was very skinny, almost anorexically skinny.”

Miss Marchildon is suing Elite for unfair dismissal and demanding they pay out
the remainder of the prize money she is owed for winning the competition.

Elite is contesting the claim. Wikke Koostra, a lawyer for the agency, said:
“It was impossible for Elite to find [Miss Marchildon] modelling jobs since
she wasn’t in the required shape.

“Couture clothing is made in one size only: (très très) petite. This is not
something agencies can change.

“I imagine they would welcome such a change since it would make their
job so much easier … but it is not in their power to change what the
market dictates.”

A judgment is expected next month.

The news comes as a respite centre which provides support for vulnerable
models, will not be able to open during London Fashion Week later this
month.

Erin O’Connor, the British supermodel who launched the Model Sanctuary in 2008
to provide “discreet health guidance and educational support” to models,
said that the centre, which was based in Covent Garden, had lost its
premises over rent issues.

Up to 200 models a day visited the sanctuary in previous years, many aged
between 16 and 18, to seek advice from nutritionists and psychologists.

Ms O’Connor said: “For reasons beyond my control, the Model Sanctuary will not
be operating during the forthcoming London Fashion Week.

“This is due to a combination of last minute changes to contributions from
sponsors and, despite an incredible response from a number of loyal and
enthusiastic supporters, we have been unable to find an alternative venue
after the home of the last few seasons became the subject to a long-term
lease.”

Ms O’Connor urged the fashion industry to “help us secure a permanent home
during London Fashion Week, so we can continue our valuable work.”
