Mitt Romney wins big on Super Tuesday

Romney won the contests in Idaho, Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia and the key battle-ground Ohio after a neck-and-neck race with rival former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, who came in second, taking Tennessee, North Dakota and Oklahoma.

Ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich triumphed in Georgia, while Texas Congressman Ron Paul did not win the vote in any of the ten states. He has, however, finished second in four states: Vermont, Idaho, North Dakota and Virginia. Results are still pending in Alaska.

So far, Romney has 38 percent support compared to Santorum’s 37 percent. Newt Gingrich follows with 15 percent and Ron Paul is in the fourth place with 9 percent.

Super Tuesday is the most critical day in the Republican race in terms of choosing a Republican candidate who will challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in the November sixth election.

The long race comes despite the fact that in the US, a president is not elected directly by the people, but by the Electoral College. This means a candidate may be elected despite losing the popular vote.
