Missing man charged with firearm offences

A 38-year-old man who went missing with an eight-year-old girl in Western Australian’s Gibson Desert has been charged with firearm offences following her death.

The girl went missing from a remote Aboriginal community on New Year’s Eve, and was found four days later about 2pm (WST) on Tuesday, around 25km from the community.

West Australian police say she was severely dehydrated and lapsed into unconsciousness soon after they found her with the 38-year-old man.

Police performed CPR on her until medical staff from Warburton arrived, but were unable to revive her.

The man she was with, a convicted pedophile who was reported missing with the girl on Monday, was charged with having an unlicensed firearm.

He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday and police said he may face further charges depending on their inquiries.
