nsnbc : A 14-year-old girl from Ukkel in Belgium that had gone missing last My, has been found in Turkey together with her about ten-days-old baby. The girl was returned to Belgium and faces charges for terrorism.
The news about the discovery and return of the girl was reported by the Belgian, Francophone public broadcaster RTBF and has been confirmed by judicial authorities in the Belgian capital Brussels. The girl – and teenage mother – has already been returned to Belgium where she is facing charges for terrorist activities.
The girl vanished on May 24 after she left home, purportedly for school. Her disappearance triggered grave convers, and for several reasons; For one, because there were no signs of life after her disappearance; For the other, because it was thought that she could have adopted extremist ideas and gone to Syria. Her elder sister had joined ISIS, reportedly as female fighter before.
The girl reportedly left Belgium “with a radicalized man who was wearing an electronic tag”. The man had a 3-year-old daughter, but there is no news about both of them. After her return the girl was first taken to hospital for a check-up. She was found to be fine and in good health and the about 10-day-old baby is fine as well.
It is not yet clear what exactly she has been doing since she went missing, but the judicial authorities will question her as soon as possible. She has been put in a youth detention centre for the time being; her baby is still in hospital until a sustainable solution has been found. If charged with terrorist activities the prosecution and the court will have to take into account that she as a 14-year-old can be criminally prosecuted but only as a minor, in juvenile court.
