Minor levee leaks found in NSW town of Hay

Leaks in Hay’s flood levees have prompted renewed warnings that residents in the NSW southwestern town may have to evacuate quickly.

The swollen Murrumbidgee River hit 8.99 metres on Monday and is expected to remain at that height for the next three to four days, State Emergency Service (SES) spokesman Dave Owen said.

Overnight there were six areas of minor concern on the Hay and South Hay levees, with minor seepage, cracking and slumping detected.

Although the SES said the local council quickly fixed the problems and the levee was being closely watched, concerns for its long-term integrity remain.

“There is significant pressure on the levee … and that pressure isn’t going to go away from the levee,” Mr Owen told AAP on Tuesday.

“We did put in place an evacuation order and should there be a breach that engineers can’t manage, people will need to leave very, very quickly.”

The SES said helicopters and flood rescue operators were on standby.

Residents were told to immediately pack up on Saturday, after faster-than-expected rising river levels prompted fears the town would be inundated by major floodwaters.

But so far only about 800 residents of a town of around 3500 are thought to have left, with more than 380 registering at the evacuation centre in Deniliquin, the SES said.

Meanwhile, in the northwestern end of the state, the all clear has been issued for the Weilmoringle reserve, with residents allowed to return home on Tuesday.

The RSPCA will be returning evacuated pets on Thursday.

“Water may remain over some local roads in the Weilmoringle area over the coming days and weeks,” the SES said.

“People are asked to take care whilst driving on this road.”

Flood operations are continuing in western NSW with a focus on resupply and planning for further impacts downstream of Bourke and other rural isolated areas, the SES said.
