Ministers to hold talks over fuel panic

Energy Secretary Ed Davey is to lead talks with haulier chiefs as the coalition government has come under fire for its dealing with the threatened strike action.

The talks are intended to delay the industrial action until next week once initial contacts with the Unite union and the seven distribution companies have been terminated by Acas.

But despite the fact that the union has not yet announced the exact date for the strike action, long queues continued at many petrol stations across the UK and some petrol pumps have already run dry.

The Petrol Retailers Association, representing around 5,500 garages, condemned Prime Minister David Cameron’s warning and Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude’s advice to fill up jerry cans.

“This is exactly what we didn’t want – people panic-buying. Deliveries are still being made to garages and we are advising people to continue with their normal buying habits,” a spokesman said.

Labour considered the government’s handling of fuel crisis as “shambolic and shameful.” Shadow chancellor Ed Balls said the politicians of all parties should not play politics in these situations but to”urge the employers and the trade unions to get round the table.”

On Thursday, massive panic-buying was reported across Britain, which led to long queues outside some garages and “sold out” or “food only” signs on some others.

Fuel tanker drivers in Britain voted for strike action to voice their outrage over their working conditions and health and safety regulations. About 8,000 petrol stations would be closed up and the country would reportedly be pushed to a crippling standstill.

Britain came to a standstill for a week in September 2000 after the protesters blocked the refineries. Petrol stations ran dry at the time and people were angered for failing to buy enough fuel.
