Minister visits Middle East abattoirs

Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig has returned from the Middle East believing new laws governing the export of Australian livestock for slaughter to the region will work.

Exporters have expressed concerns that the guidelines, a recommendation of last year’s Farmer Review of the livestock export industry, had not been properly explained to local authorities in Middle East sheep markets.

The regulations require exporters to prove they can trace animals for slaughter, and that they are treated at or above internationally accepted welfare standards.

After returning from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar on Friday, Senator Ludwig, who was accompanied by a delegation of Australian industry representatives, said he believed the new regulatory framework for Australian livestock exports to the Middle East would work.

“I visited a number of feedlots and abattoirs on my visit, some of which were processing Australian sheep,” he said in a statement.

“The practices that I saw were as good as you would see in some Australian facilities.

“It’s evident that recent improvements have been made, and I suspect those improvements will continue.”

Before the trip some exporters indicated they wanted more time to conform to the new regulations.

On Friday a spokeswoman for Senator Ludwig said the government was sticking to the end-of-February deadline.

“There is still a lot to be done, and a lot can change in four weeks, but at the moment we are sticking to the February 29 deadline, and industry are happy to stick with that as well, for the time being,” she said.

The Farmer Review of the livestock export industry wrapped up in October, after a public outcry over mistreatment of Australian cattle sold to Indonesia halted live animal sales until improved procedures were adopted.

In 2010-11, 2.9 million sheep worth $343.5 million were exported to Middle Eastern markets.
