A West Australian mining company has been granted a lease to mine for hematite in Tasmania’s Tarkine region on the west coast.
The mining lease covers Venture Minerals’ proposed hematite mine at Livingstone, in the Meredith Ranges Regional Reserve near Tullah.
The company hopes to receive final approvals and start work on the mine before the end of the year.
Under the conditions of the mining lease, the company still needs environmental approval before it can start production.
The Resources Minister Bryan Green says the mine would employ 30 people in construction and a similar number once it is operating.
Mr Green says Venture Minerals has spent about $25 million on exploration in the region in the past four years.
Scott Jordan from the Tarkine National Coalition has accused the Minister of fast-tracking the proposed hematite mine lease.
Mr Jordan says the approval is destroying the possibility of making the area a World Heritage site.
“It is a clear sabotage of the forest process, we have got people in the negotiations at the moment talking over the outcomes of the West report, including a recommendation that the area should be considered for World Heritage listing.”
Venture Minerals is also developing a hematite prospect at nearby Riley Creek, as well as its flagship Mt Lindsay tin and tungsten project.
