Mine accident leaves 13 dead in China

The incident took place at around 1 a.m. local time on Thursday (1700 GMT on Wednesday) at the Shimen Iron Ore Mine in the Lucheng township of Cangshan County in Linyi city.

An unnamed provincial official said that initial investigation showed that the capsule fell down as the steel rope broke.

Further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

The privately-run Shimen Iron Ore Mine belongs to the Jinan Iron and Steel Group.

China has a dismal industrial safety record. Industrial safety rules have often been ignored in favor of profit, as the economy has boomed.

China’s demand for steel is among the highest in the world, with the country seeking to feed a boom in the construction of housing and infrastructure, such as roads and railways.
