Millions of Brits struggle to pay rent

According a research conducted by the Homeless charity Shelter, the number of people in the UK struggling to pay their rent or mortgage has soared by 44 per cent over the past year, with a fifth of those surveyed, equating to 7.8 million Britons, facing a monthly battle to keep a roof over their heads.

The charity, which questioned 4,000 people across Britain, also found that 1.4 million people went into 2013 in rent or mortgage arrears, while nearly 1 million people took out a payday loan over the last 12 months to help them cover their mortgage or rent.

In addition, the study revealed that seven percent of those surveyed, about 2.8 million Britons, dipped into unauthorized overdrafts to pay their way.

Meanwhile, rents have increased over the last year, as tenants have found themselves unable to meet lenders’ toughened criteria or raise the typical 20 percent deposit needed to buy a property.

Antonia Bance from Shelter said that the charity is “shocked and worried” about the number of people struggling to pay their mortages and rent.

“It’s shocking to think so many families will be starting the new year with a huge weight hanging over them, trapped in a daily struggle to keep their home,’ said Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb.
