nsnbc : At least 90 lost their lives and 1,050 were injured during a failed military coup in Turkey last night. Turkey’s military chief was rescued. Some 750 soldiers were arrested. Who exactly was behind the coup is still uncertain. President R. Tayyip Erdogan accuses networks around the U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fetullah Gülen.
Both Istanbul and Ankara saw heavy clashes between military units involved in the attempted coup, police, and military loyal to the government. People from all parties came out in their thousands and participated in the standoff with the revolting troops.
Saturday morning Turkey’s President R. Tayyip Erdogan addressed a large crowd of people in Istanbul as police and security services were in the process of rounding up the last of the troops and suspects believed to be behind the coup. Erdogan assured that the government is in control and stressed that “In Turkey the army isn’t governing the State and cannot, and this should be known by all”.
Erdogan who was on vacation, arrived in Istanbul in the early morning hours after his plane had flown in a holding pattern until it was safe to land at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport. The attempted military “intervention” and the attempt to rule Turkey by a military-led “Peace Council” appears to have failed.
The office of the President announced Saturday morning that at least 90 had lost their lives while more than 1,050 have been injured. The exact number of deaths and casualties is at this time unknown.
State media reported that Turkey’s military Chief of Staff, General Hulusi Akar has been rescued from revolting troops in an operation at an air base at the outskirts of Ankara.
Some 750 soldiers have reportedly been detained across the country. Police and intelligence services continue to round-up possible participants and those believed to be linked to the coup. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has reportedly called legislators for an emergency meeting on Saturday.
The coup dissipated as swiftly as it manifested. On Friday military units blocked the two bridges across the Bosporus in Istanbul. Troops were deployed at strategic locations in Istanbul and Ankara. Administrative buildings and media were seized.
The coup, military rule and the governance of Turkey by a “Peace Council” was announced on State television. The mystery masterminds behind the coup, however, did not show their faces and had their statement read out by the news anchor. Several hours later it was all over and President R. Tayyip Erdogan is now in a position that enables him to further increase the power of the presidency.
After his plane had landed at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport, Erdogan blamed the Turkish cleric Fetullah Gülen and Gülenist networks around him of being behind the attempted coup. The 74-year-old Fetullah Gülen is living in Pennsylvania, USA in a self-imposed exile. The Gülenist network is believed to be linked to the CIA, deep NATO intelligence structures, and the “deep State” of Turkey.
Gülenist networks have also penetrated political parties throughout Europe, with some of them holding office as elected officials. The network is particularly prevalent in European countries with a relatively large number of Turkish immigrants and citizens with a Turkish background.
