Militants kill nine Pakistani soldiers

According to army officials, the convoy was passing through Amin Picket, a security post on a hilltop outside Miranshah, the capital of North Waziristan, when “dozens” of militants assaulted the soldiers on Sunday morning.

“Militants hiding there opened fire on the soldiers with AK-47 assault rifles and RPGs,” said a senior army official, who asked not to be named.

“Three gunship choppers were called in but the militants even fired rockets at the choppers.”

The attack left nine troops dead, including one officer, and 12 others were wounded.

The army official added that the troops had counterattacked and killed “a number of militants.”

Tribesmen in Miranshah said they saw military helicopter gunships firing at suspected militant positions in the town.

“As we were very close to the battlefield and could see from roofs of our houses, the security suffered heavy losses,” a local resident said.

Over 35,000 Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.
