Milat’s nephew executed a ‘thrill kill’

The murder of a teenager in the Belanglo State Forest by two young men, including a relative of serial killer Ivan Milat, was an “adrenalin rush and a thrill kill”, a Supreme Court judge has been told.

The November 2010 killing of 17-year-old David Auchterlonie was “all about torment and torture”, crown prosecutor Lloyd Babb, SC, said in his closing submissions on Monday.

Matthew Milat, a relative of serial killer Ivan Milat, and Cohen Klein, both 19, have pleaded guilty to murdering David on his 17th birthday.

The victim was attacked with an axe on November 20, 2010, in the same NSW Southern Highlands forest where Ivan Milat murdered seven backpackers in the early 1990s.

“The crown submits in relation to the motive for both these young men that it was an adrenalin rush and a thrill kill,” Mr Babb told the sentencing hearing, adding the young men got a thrill from seeing someone murdered.

“This is a situation where Mr Milat has taken this double-sided axe to the Belanglo State Forest, a location with some meaning for him.”

The court heard Klein said to Milat after the murder, “I told you you’re going to go down the same path as your uncle”.

Mr Babb submitted neither of the young men were remorseful, with Milat “glorifying the murder through poetry”, while Klein continued to maintain he was a passive participant.

A chilling recording of the murder, which was previously played to the court, was made as a “trophy”, Mr Babb added.

The sentencing hearing is continuing before Acting Justice Jane Mathews.
