nsnbc : Former Georgian president and former governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region, Mikail Saakashvili, has been detained in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Saakashvili head the Movement of New Forces party in Ukraine.
After his arrest, law enforcement officers unceremoniously shoved Saakashvili out of the entrance of the building on Kostiolna Street in a minibus.
The movement of the vehicle along Kostiolna Street was secured by law enforcement officers who had blocked parts of the street and were shoving Saakashvili supporters aside.
Peaceful supporters of Saakashvili and his Movement of New Forces shouted “Shame on you”. Some of them were reportedly agitating in the hope that others would turn over cars.
Some of the protesters became creative and used garbage tanks in an attempt to block the road to prevent the minibus from leaving the scene.
nsnbc cannot determine whether there could have been agents provocateurs among the protesters. Clashes between law enforces and activists continued for some time.
Early on Tuesday, law enforcement officers searched Saakashvili’s apartment on Kostiolna Street. Saakashvili’s lawyer, Markiyan Halabala, said his client is charged with facilitating the activities of a criminal group.
