From The Daily Sheeple
A high school in Michigan was closed after students parked their vehicles outside the building for two days. Some of the trucks were adorned with American or “thin blue line flags,” but the Confederate flags caused school officials to shut down the school after they received “unsubstantiated threats” against the trucks.
Don’t get us wrong; the thin blue line flags are highly ridiculous, but that’s not what set people off.
Six trucks flying or painted with the Confederate battle flag parked outside of the school on Tuesday and were joined by others on Wednesday when they were met by a counter-demonstration against “racism and bigotry,” according to ABC News. School officials say the “potential threat” posed toward those bearing the flags has forced the closure of a central Michigan high school.
Bay City Public Schools Superintendent Stephen Bigelow told The Bay City Times he had canceled classes Thursday at Bay City Western High after being informed about rumors that people planned to confront students. WJRT-TV reported that Bigelow said in a message to parents that the rumors were “unsubstantiated,” but involved threats from outside the school district.
According to MLive, Bigelow said he didn’t even know for sure if the threat was related to the trucks bearing Confederate flag images or not, because he was still working with police to figure out who made the threat. “That’s my guess,” Bigelow said of the threat being associated with the Confederate flag display. “That is what I’m assuming, but I don’t even know that.”
Bigelow said there isn’t a whole lot he could do from a disciplinary standpoint in terms of the Confederate flag display because it was not on school property and due to freedom of speech protections.
Being afraid of inanimate objects, symbols, or flags is getting a little insane. We’ve got people on the right who threaten physical harm to those who don’t treat American flags correctly, and people on the left who threaten physical harm against those who fly a historical flag from the Civil War era. Welcome to America: where flags and symbols matter more than people.
