My moniker has been the Biochemist. I’m writing this on behalf of the other editors and technical staff involved with Open Your Eyes News.
I, personally, have been involved with OYE News since early June 2009. The first time I met with James was on the 9th June. I started posting by 30th of June, but was encouraged to contribute not only articles, but to decisions re OYE News even before officially being on board. People have come and gone from this project, but, I believe, always feeling better overall for having been involved. Which brings me to one of my favourite quotes from Pete Seeger talking to Harry Chapin: A very telling piece of commentary on the album: ‘Gold Medal Collection’ called “Commitment and Pete Seeger” (I have transcribed it as follows:)
Harry speaking: Pete Seeger was nice enough to come out and do a benefit with us. Somebody asked him a question, about how he felt about all these years of being involved with things like this. and he sorta answered me:
“Harry, my involvement in a cause, benefit, march or demonstration – I’m not sure it’s made a difference.” and here’s a guy who’s being very modest, because for 40 years he’s stood up for every major issue of our times. Fighting facism in the early 40′s late 30′s. ” But I CAN tell you one thing – that being involved in these issues means that you’re involved with the good people – the people with the live hearts, live eyes, live heads.” I mean, Just think about it in terms of your lives, you people out there listening: The whole stance of the music industry during the late 70′s was ‘look at your navel and say “boogie”‘ – and try to get some complexity and passion and excitement out of that. Well – who are the people who are your best friends? Who’re the people you keep coming back to? Who’re the people that make your life worthwhile? Usually, they are the people who are committed to something. So – in the final analysis – commitment in it’s itself – irrespective of if you win or not – is something that truly makes your life worthwhile.
So, in light of this I want to say that, through OYE News, I have been involved with the people with the live hearts and live heads . I include ALL the people involved with OYE News since its inception – you know who you are. J Thankyou, for making it possible for me to have this commitment. Thankyou too, to all the current editors, for being a part of my Life’s experience. But most of all, thankyou to James and his co-founders, for making it possible for ALL of us at OYEN to experience commitment and question what we are told in various forums. To finish, I am now going to put in ANOTHER shorter quote published recently by the NY Times:
“This church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal church to a nest protecting our mediocrity.”
