Merkel warns against dismissing cuts

In an address at the German parliament on Thursday, Merkel said the eurozone could only get rid of its debt crisis by lowering its borrowing levels.

“Cutting debt and strengthening growth as well as employment are both pillars of the strategy” to help Europe out of its deepening debt crisis, she stated.

The comments came against the backdrop of the defeat in recent elections of ruling parties advocating austerity measures in Greece and France.

The results of the recent polls have given rise to the fears about the fate of austerity measures in Europe.

In her speech, Merkel rejected euro bonds as a means of underpinning Europe’s economy, a campaign pledge that contributed to François Hollande win the French presidential election.

“There is no golden path or supposed miracle cure,” she said, warning that Europe has to fight a long and tough battle to beat its economic crisis.

“Overcoming the crisis is a long and arduous process that will only succeed if we start at the root of the crisis, and that’s the horrendous indebtedness and lack of competitiveness of some euro countries.”

The EU will hold a meeting on economic growth on May 23 in Brussels, following a Group of Eight summit of major economies at Camp David, Maryland, on May 18-19.
