German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she supports Jean-Claude Juncker, the former premier of Luxembourg, to become the next president of the European Commission.
EU leaders traditionally choose the commission’s head on their own, but under current rules they have to take into account the results of the European Parliament elections.
The European People’s Party (EPP), to which both Juncker’s and Merkel’s parties belong, won 213 out of 751 seats in the European Parliament elections last week. The group chose Juncker as its candidate for the presidency succeeding Jose Manuel Barroso.
Speaking at a Catholic Assembly in Regensburg, Germany, on Friday, Merkel said the winning candidate in Sunday’s European election should get the post.
The EPP “with its top candidate Jean-Claude Juncker has become the strongest political power which is why I am now conducting all talks exactly in this spirit, that Jean-Claude Juncker should become president of the European Commission,” she added.
Merkel’s remarks are seen as her clearest statement of support for Juncker, who once chaired the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers. Juncker’s main rival is Martin Schulz, whose Social Democrats finished second in the elections.
Some EU leaders, including British Prime Minister David Cameron, however, voiced their opposition to Merkel’s remarks.
During a European Summit in Brussels earlier this week, Cameron expressed his opposition to Juncker getting the job, saying he wants a reformer to take the top position.
Other European leaders opposing Juncker include Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
