Merkel: 2014 Afghan pullout uncertain

“Therefore, I can also not say that we will manage that by 2013/2014. The will is there, we want to do that and we are working towards that,” Merkel said.

The German chancellor made the announcement after meeting with German soldiers stationed at the northern town of Mazar-i-Sharif.

Merkel’s visit comes one day after 17 Afghan civilians were shot dead in their homes in the middle of the night by US soldiers. She also offered her “deepest condolences” over the killings in the southern province of Kandahar.

Germany has the third largest number of troops in the US-led war with around 4,900 soldiers deployed there. More than 50 soldiers have been killed since Berlin joined the invasion of Afghanistan in 2002.

Recent opinion polls indicate that Germany’s involvement in the US-led war has been consistently unpopular among its people.

In January, NATO released announced plans to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan in 2014, when Afghan authorities are scheduled to take over national security.

Civilian casualties in Afghanistan have been a major source of tension between Kabul and Washington.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led troops.
