Men Reddit, women Twitter in the social media battle of the sexes

Women are the dominant force on both Facebook and Twitter while men rule the roost on Reddit, according to an infographic on social media constructed by New York-based agency DigitalFlashNYC.

The infographic uses data from numerous sources and surveys to construct a picture of the different ways in which men and women in the US use social media.

According to the infographic, women are more dominant on social media as a whole, accounting for 56 percent of all social network users, but despite being in the minority it is men who are more prone to embarrassment, being twice as likely to post something they later regret.

In terms of individual social networks, women lead the way on both Facebook and Twitter, accounting for 58 and 64 percent of users respectively. Women are also far more likely to comment on posts and photos and 18 percent update their status daily, compared to only 11 percent of men.

However, the social network where the fairer sex have the largest majority is Pinterest, where a massive 82 percent of users are women.

Men, however, readdress the gender imbalance seen on Pinterest by dominating Reddit, Google+,  and LinkedIn, where they account for 84 percent, 71 percent and 63 percent of users respectively. In fact, according to DigitalFlashNYC, there are more men on LinkedIn that there are women on LinkedIn, Reddit and Google+ combined.

The only network where membership between the sexes was nearly equal was the San Francisco-based social discovery site Tagged, where men and women where split 49/51 percent.
