The activists planted the olive seedlings in Palestinian land under threat of confiscation to be part of the Jewish-only Shilo settlement, which stands on land belonging to Qaryut, south of Nablus city.
The activists were affiliated with Palestinian popular resistance committees, independent groups that lobby against Israeli settlement construction activities and the separation wall. Some foreign activists often join the members of the committees in solidarity.
“Today we’re planting trees to remember and honor the memory of Rachel Corrie, who was killed defending Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip,” activist Wael al-Faqih told.
Sarah Qadoura, a student of Birzeit University near Ramallah, for her part, said: “We’re here today as an integral component of the Palestinian people to stand against the occupation and its attempts to steal our land.”
Minor clashes broke out between activists and Israeli army troops who used teargas to disperse the demonstration, leaving several activists with temporary asphyxiation.
On March 16, 2003, Corrie stood in front of an Israeli army bulldozer to prevent it from demolishing Palestinian homes, but she was bulldozed to death.
She had come from Washington earlier the same year as part of a group of American volunteers to show solidarity with the Palestinians, but the journey to the Palestinian territory proved to be her last.
Investigations into Corrie’s death by the Gaza-based Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights concluded that the driver of the Israeli army bulldozer had buried Corrie alive.
The Israeli army claimed, however, that the driver did not see Corrie who wore a bright orange fluorescent jacket in order to distinguish herself and was addressing the bulldozer driver over a loudspeaker.
The late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat lauded Corrie as a “martyr”.
Several Palestinian cultural centers have since been called after her.
In 2013, the Central Israeli Court in Haifa exonerated the Israeli army of responsibility for Corrie’s killing.
Palestinian rights organizations criticized the verdict, saying the American activist bore witness to many of Israel’s atrocities.
At the time, Palestinian MP Jamal al-Khoudari said Corrie would continue to be an unforgettable symbol of freedom for the Palestinian people.
“The Palestinian people will remain indebted to Corrie, her family and her lovers,” al-Khoudari had said, adding that “she will continue to be a symbol of freedom and sacrifice.”
