Melbourne newcomer bashed unconscious

A 22-year-old man bashed unconscious with an iron bar at a Melbourne train station had moved to the city from Queensland just six weeks ago to start a new life.

Daniel Robinson was attacked by a group of 10 men whom he had chatted to while catching a train home from work to Dandenong station around midnight on November 19.

The men, aged between 17 and 21 and of Islander and African appearance, followed the former Sunshine Coast resident when he left the carriage and attacked him in the station carpark.

Detective senior constable Carolyn Tabone told The Age four of the men bashed Mr Robinson while up to six others watched.

“That was my welcome to Melbourne,” Mr Robinson, who now lives in Doveton, said.

“It was pretty disgusting, pretty cowardly act.”

Security footage of the attack shows Mr Robinson, who had just started a new job as a salesman, lying unconscious and bleeding on the ground for two minutes.

When he finally came to he stumbled around until he was able to find somebody with a phone to call for help.

He was taken to hospital with severe injuries to his head and upper body, including a broken shoulder.

Mr Robinson’s family, including a twin brother and four sisters, now want him to return to Queensland, but he still wants to give his new life in Melbourne a try.

Police believe several people may have seen the attack and are asking for witnesses to come forward.

So far this year, there have been more than 3000 robbery victims in Victoria, a jump of 5.8 per cent over last year.

Assaults are also on a 6.2 per cent rise, a trend which police have linked to youths targeting other young people in largely opportunistic crimes.
