Medvedev becomes United Russia head

Medvedev on Saturday replaced President Vladimir Putin as the chairman of the ruling party after the two men swapped jobs in the Kremlin.

In April, Putin said he would quit the post and nominated Medvedev to replace him. Putin announced that leading the party is inappropriate for the president.

Speaking at the party congress in Moscow, Medvedev made clear that the party’s target was to win the next parliamentary elections in 2016.

“In five years, when there are new elections into the State Duma, United Russia must win,” he said.

Putin has been the leader of the party since 2007.

United Russia holds a majority in parliament, but in last year’s elections lost the absolute control it held in the previous sitting.

The parliamentary elections sparked anti-government demonstrations over claims the polls were marred by ballot-rigging.
