The reports said Israel continues its decades-long occupation of the western Saudi Arabia islands of Tiran and Sanafir, while Western and Arab governments, including the Saudis themselves, have so far kept mum on the issue.

The islands are located at the southern end of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Straits of Tiran, which leads to the Red Sea.

Tiran and Sanafir have a combined surface area of over 110 square kilometers and have been under Israeli occupation since 1967 after Israel defeated Egypt during the Six-Day War.

Saudi Arabia had allowed former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser to use the islands for logistical purposes during the war against Israeli forces.

The Straits of Tiran, which has since remained under the control of Israel, enjoys a high degree of strategic significance as it provides Tel Aviv with the only direct access route to the Red Sea.
