Media bosses fight ‘free speech threat’

Media executives have penned letters to the prime minister and opposition leader, warning that planned changes to media laws are a threat to free speech.

The seven media bosses – APN News Media CEO Brett Chenoweth, AAP chief Bruce Davidson, David Gyngell of Nine Entertainment, Angelos Frangopolous of Sky News, Foxtel boss Richard Freudenstein, Don Voelte of Seven West Media and News Limited CEO Kim Williams – called for Julia Gillard to dismiss the planned reforms to tighten limits on ownership and news coverage.

They want Tony Abbott to commit to repealing them if the coalition wins the next election, The Australian reports.

Fairfax Media boss Greg Hywood’s signature was reportedly absent from the letter to Ms Gillard.

The signatories told the political leaders that any news regulator must not be funded by government, and that a `public interest test’ on media owners could be open to abuse by politicians.
