‘Meddling in Syria causes chaos in ME’

Hulya Guven said in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday the Syrian people should be allowed to find a solution to the problem in their country without foreign interference, like the people of any other country.

“We, as the Republican People’s Party, believe that any foreign intervention will create utter chaos in the Middle East region and this is why we are against any foreign intervention in Syria.”

Guven also stated that the situation in Syria has negatively affected the Turkish economy as Turkish exports to the neighboring country have come to a standstill.

The Turkish lawmaker made the comments a couple of days after a ceasefire went into effect in Syria on April 12 in line with a peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in efforts to bring an end to more than a year of turmoil in the country.

The UN Security Council passed its resolution 2042 on April 14, authorizing the deployment of a team of up to 30 unarmed observers in Syria. However, the United Nations will seek approval for a larger group of about 250 observers under certain conditions.

The first group of six UN observers arrived in Syria late on April 15 to monitor the ceasefire and the remaining 24 members of the group are expected to arrive in Damascus in the coming days.
